What is your opinion on suckless?

Anonymous:The guys that made software like like dwm, st,
surf etc.
Here is their 'philosophy.'

Anonymous:I used to sympathise this ideology, because I like minimalism. But suckless products are unusable out of the box and that’s a real problem when you need to get shit done.
Therefore, I stick to more robust solutions.

Pretty based opinion. The same reason why I use
stuff like e.g. Debian without caring much about
systemd.
>suckless products are unusable out of the boxThis is true and sort of the whole point.
You config your e.g. key bindings on dwm's
config.h file and if you're slightly advanced you might be able to poke around the main source file
as well.
I kind of like that aspect, and wish more people
started doing it. But for bigger-scaled programs,
I definitely see why it wouldn't appeal.

BEANIE NIAGAG:gnome just werks. so does kde. we all went through out unixporn phase.

Anonymous:dwm and dmenu are very nice, but suckless seems like a small team, and maximizing simplicity doesn't always produce the best software. i.e. xterm is a code monster but still runs faster and more securely than st. http://f6apvocrlyqxjxcfb5vpbapt42mug25qsxhqjkyohcpjfvleb4e6rzad.onion/2021/xterm-isnt-bloated.html

Anonymous:It still sucks.
Lisp way of thinking is better.

I think he meant making complete programs vs EUNICS way of not doing "complicated" things because muh bloat. Useful features aren't bloat.

Emacs does everything and sucks at everything.
Unix does one thing and you can glue it well, if you have no life.
Commercial software does several things and does them well out of the box unless it's trendy garbage added for marketing purposes.
11
Anonymous:>Emacs does everything and sucks at everything.<Vim doesn't do much and it sucks at everything.
Comments like that are cancer because they aren't backed by facts or real arguments.
12
Anonymous:>Vim doesn't do much and it sucks at everything. Not true. It doesn't suck at being a terminal text editor. Vim falls into Unix category that you need to throw out your life to learn how to exit Vim before it's somehow useful.
>Comments like that are cancer because they aren't backed by facts or real arguments. They are backed by my experience. What evidence do you need? I started developing a Spring Boot pet project and Java LSP in Emacs failed to start no matter what. It appeared that this garbage doesn't support Java installed by SDKman, which is a standard suite for real developers. It doesn't care even if I set the proper Java path in Emacs environment.
So I said myself "fuck it" and installed IntelliJ that I use at my daily job. It's not so bad, TBH, though some features are excessive.

It's helpful to elaborate and explain things because a single person's opinion doesn't mean much. Especially on the Internet.

People naturally coalesce around the positions of a few big name thinkers.
16
Anonymous:Suckless is just useless retarded shit. No one needs muh minimalist fucking terminal THAT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE SCROLLING SUPPORT BY DEFAULT LMFAO truly idiotic excuse that you just can't be bothered to add in support, and have to rely on external patches when IT'S JUST A SIMPLE FUCKING FEATURE THAT'S NOT BLOATED. truly delusional fucking natsoc tards.

Windows sucks for everything except for PC gayming.

They're not natsoc though. Or do you just mean the purity spiraling?

Anonymous:I've been using DWM for over a decade now. I wish I could find something better. It's saddening that I'm stuck with it. I'd like to make a fork but I can't justify the time.
20
Anonymous:>>19
Have you tried Awesome? It started out as DWM fork. It uses Lua for config files. I think it's pretty cool! copy the default config from /etc/xdg/awesome/rc.lua and use it as your starting point (or steal someone's config). You can find helpful tips at: https://awesomewm.org/recipes/
Another good WM is FVWM 2 (or 3). It's very customizable as well (like Awesome).
21
Anonymous:What terminals do you guys use? I still use st because I haven't been bothered with anything else and it's ok for what I want. I did switch over to i3 from dwm though and I find it much nicer to use.

RXVT-Unicode (URXVT) or Alacritty. But I could just use GNU Emacs and M-x ansi-term
