Half the time on imageboards and textboards, it's not legitimate bigotry, it's just retards trying to be edgy. Anyone who is an oldfag to these sort of places will understand the culture used to be pretty normal. But I guess around 2015 onwards, everything about "*chan culture" and these sort of boards went to hell, populated by edgy newfags that just try to be more obnoxious than the person they're replying to. Usenet had its Eternal September era (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September) and these sort of boards suffered from the same thing, most notably a rise in politically charged people when 4chan made /pol/ as well as just a constant influx of immature newfags that came in when 4chan became known to the mainstream.

Some are legit racist and awful people no doubt and sadly the normal conversations get drowned out by the edgelords - or it just keeps the normal people away because who wants to hang out in what is basically a slow moving CoD lobby? But it's a hard thing to combat. You don't want to censor these kind of places more than you need to (so like removing CP) because it's sort of the antithesis of anonymous board culture, but that means you end up with a lot of low quality retard posters who just want to call each other slurs and trannies.

But it was all just sort of in good fun and intentionally meant to be totally absurd, the same way people would make pedobear and loli jokes (who remembers really absurd threads like the "baby fuck baby fuck aw yeah!" manga page that would get posted?). Now it's just so low quality that you can't tell if it's really some hillbilly retard that voted for Trump and believes in nanotechnology in vaccines or some bored NEET shitposting in between gaming sessions and anime marathons.

Either way, the culture is dead. Some still try to keep it going but I fear it's a futile battle. Like trying to keep a flame going despite torrential downpours of rain, knowing that once it goes out, it will cease to exist...

Kudos to those who still run boards and try to keep a good community, but there is almost too much trash to wade through to make it worth bothering. I found this board spammed on other boards and thought oh interesting, someone made a new board. But as usual, it's full of low quality posts.

Freedom on the old net didn't come from sites being lawless wastelands, it came from the fact that anyone could make their own websites with their own rules and many people did. If you didn't like the rules of a site you could fuck off to another one, or even make your own.

The issue is that now 90% of people use only over-domineering mainstream platforms, with loads of bullshit unfairly applied rules, and the remaining 10%, as a form of rebellion, want only lawless wastelands with no rules whatever.
